The Voges-Proskauer (VP) test is used to determine the amount of acetylmethylcarbonol produced by glucose fermentation by organisms. In the production of acetylmethyl carbinol, it is converted to diacetyl in the presence of reagent A, reagent B and atmospheric oxygen. Diacetyl compounds and compounds containing guanidine form in concentrated peptons and form a pink-red polymer.
