The methyl red test is used to determine the ability of an organism to produce and maintain end-products of acid from glucose fermentation. This test is useful for distinguishing between Enterobacteriaceae and is usually carried out alongside the Voges-Proskauer (VP) test because both experiments are performed on cultures grown in MRVP Broth.
